The United States urged the Libyan military to stop fighting, obeying Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, and killing its own people, U.S. Navy Vice Admiral William Gortney said at a Pentagon briefing, AFP reported March 24. Gortney said regime forces will be attacked when they threaten citizens and will be stopped if they try to break the embargo. More than 350 aircraft are involved in the situation, slightly more than half belonging to the United States, Gortney said. Nine nations, including Qatar, are contributing, and thousands of coalition military personnel are involved in the effort, deployed across Europe and the Mediterranean in onshore bases and 38 ships at sea, Gortney added. The only known civilian casualties are ones caused by the Libyan government, Gortney said.
