The African Union (AU) called for an immediate halt to all attacks March 20 after the United States, France and Britain launched military airstrikes against forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, AFP reported. Following a four-hour meeting in the Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott, the AU said Libyan authorities need to ensure humanitarian aid is reaching those in need as well as ensuring the protection of foreigners, especially African expatriates living in Libya. AU called for a March 25 meeting in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa between representatives from the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Conference, the European Union and the United Nations to devise mechanisms for consultation and concerted action to resolve the Libyan crisis.
The armed military action against Libya as outlined in the “hastily passed” U.N. Security Council Resolution 1973 is deplorable to Russia, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said, Interfax reported March 20. Lukashevich said Russia urges all parties involved to avoid civilian suffering, achieve a ceasefire and end the violence as soon as possible.
