There was no competition between Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Mahdavi-Kani and Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani for the chairmanship of the Iranian Assembly of Experts despite foreign media reports to the contrary, Ayatollah Seyyed Ahmad Khatami said March 8, Iranian TV reported. In fact, Rafsanjani had offered to withdraw his candidacy during the previous election so that Mahdavi-Kani could run, though Mahdavi-Kani refused to submit his candidacy. Rafsanjani again offered to withdraw his name in the event Mahdavi-Kani wanted to run for the post, which he did for this election, Khatami said, adding that the transition took place under friendly circumstances. Mahdavi-Kani received 63 out of 81 possible votes (though an additional vote in his favor was not considered because it was submitted late), making him the new Assembly of Experts head for two years, according to Khatami.
