Around 100 Saudi Shiite protesters, mostly young men, staged a rally in Awwamiya in eastern Saudi Arabia demanding the release of prisoners they say are being held without trial, local witnesses said March 3, Reuters reported. The protesters shouted “Peaceful, peaceful,” while holding up pictures of the prisoners in question. Police officials reportedly did not interfere with rally. In February, authorities released three Shiite prisoners after a similar protest in Awwamiya. The protesters’ only demand was the release of the prisoners, according to Shiite activist Zaki al-Saleh, who did not participate in the rally.
